Marshfield: A gem on the South Shore

What is now Marshfield was first settled by Europeans when the Pilgrims arrived in 1620 and led by Edward Winslow, who became Plymouth Bay Colony governor and the go-between for the British government and local indigenous peoples, became a separate settlement in 1632.

During the American Revolution, Marshfield was known as the most Loyalist town in New England, with most residents backing English rule continuing in the Colonies. This did not end well for the local loyalists after the British evacuated Boston in March of 1776. They faced harassment and violence, and, under the Tory Banishment Act, many had their homes and land confiscated while they and their families were banished from Massachusetts. While some returned several years later, many of those banished from Marshfield settled in Nova Scotia.

The first industries in Marshfield was fishing, livestock, farming, and haying the grasses in the salt marshes. As the area grew, ship building and one of the earliest nail factories were established.

Brant Rock in Marshfield was the location of the first-ever transatlantic radio broadcast in 1907.

Disaster occurred in 1941 with the Great Brant Rock Fire, which in a matter of four hours destroyed about 600 structures, including approximately 450 homes, a church, a few hotels, and the popular Ocean Bluff Casino resort. Miraculously, no one died in the fire.

Today, Marshfield’s beaches draw tourists for family-friendly summer fun as well as residents for its commuting access to the Boston area, but retains its agrarian roots with several local farms and the Marshfield Fair, one of the oldest continuing agricultural fairs in the United States with its start in 1862.

Notable Marshfield natives and residents include:

Daniel Webster: Two-time Secretary of State (under Millard Fillmore, William Henry Harrison, and John Tyler), two-time Senator from Massachusetts, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, two-time Congressman, chairman of the House Finance Committee, known as one of the great orators of his time. His son, Fletcher, served as a colonel in the Union Army and died in the Battle of Bull Run.

Steve Carrell: Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated actor best known for his role as cringe-y boss Michael Scott on the sitcom The Office.

Steven Tyler: Lead singer of the legendary rock band Aerosmith.

F. Lee Bailey: Criminal lawyer who was a part of OJ Simpson’s defense team during Simpson’s 1995 murder trial, and also served as an attorney for confessed Boston Strangler Albert DeSalvo, heiress Patty Hearst, Ohio surgeon Sam Sheppard who was accused of murdering his wife (the case went on to become the inspiration for the TV series and movie The Fugitive), and Ernest Medina, a U.S. Army Captain accused of planning, ordering, and supervising the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War.
